Why We Raise KuneKune Pigs

When we first set out to raise pigs for our family’s pork supply, I’ll admit I was a little hesitant. Like many, I’d heard the usual stories: pigs are aggressive, hard on fences, and destructive to pastures. With young children at home, we needed a breed that was safe, manageable, and pasture friendly. After a lot of research, we decided to give KuneKunes a try, and it didn’t take long for us to realize that defied every misconception we had. They turned out to be the perfect fit for our family.

Gentle Grazers

KuneKune pigs are a rare heritage breed from New Zealand, and what makes them so special is that they’re true grazing pigs. Instead of rooting up pastures like many other breeds, they’re perfectly content grazing on grass.  What we love most is how cost-effective they are to raise while still producing high-quality pork. Yes, they grow slower than commercial breeds, but they make up for it in efficiency. They require far less feed to reach a usable size, and their mature weight, typically between 200–300+ pounds, is just right. Large enough to fill the freezer, yet still manageable for families who want to do their own processing.

Perfect Family Pig

Temperament and safety were extremely important, especially with young children on the farm.  Our children have grown up alongside our KuneKunes, and some of our sweetest farm memories are of them playing with piglets. KuneKunes are known for their friendly, docile personalities. They adore attention, belly rubs and scratches are their favorite! They’re also easy to care for and smart enough to quickly respect electric fencing, making them easy to contain. Whether you’re raising them as a companion or for pork, KuneKunes are truly a joy to have on the homestead.
